The project aims to improve the conservation status of priority habitats, Casaraccio pond and Stintino’s Salt marsh Stintino and four species of birds, the Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), the Little Tern (Sternula albifrons) and the common Tern (Sterna hirundo). The project involves the acquisition of land to restore and preserve habitat and construct artificial islands for nesting birds.
The Life + has been approved by resolution of the City Council on October 20 last year. The economic framework provides a total expenditure of € 1,916,024 of which 1,146,521 euro, or 60%, funded entirely by the European Community, and 769,503 euro financing with intangible actions by the municipality of Stintino.
Now the council is willing to take actions that will help to revitalize this important area at the entrance of the village.
From 2010 to 2016, the population of Common Tern and Little Tern more than doubled, with a great reproductive success, a factor which was almost zero in the previous 10 years. All the target species couples that nest within the area, purchased with Life Tern Project, are safe from human disturbance and other limiting factors. The nesting sites have fulfilled their function well beyond the expected results. In 2016 we can say we have saved and improved the situation of the target species breeding in the Stintino Peninsula.
